Abadie, Einzelfiguren, Französische Armee

 Hello,

Today I’m showing you a few more individual figures by Abadie. This time, they are figures representing the French Army. With this, I should have actually presented every piece I’ve collected from Abadie here on the blog!

The figures are once again 6 cm tall and were included as promotional items in various packs of cigarette paper. Children's toys used to advertise tobacco products! Times have certainly changed a bit!

With these figures, too, it is noticeable that the same figures exist in slightly different colorations and sizes. This is particularly apparent with the tanks.

Best regards,

Andreas

Abadie, Einzelfiguren, Deutsche Armee

Hello,

Unfortunately, I’ve been very busy lately, which is why there hasn’t been an update for nearly a month. I promise to do better.

In any case, today I’m showing you a few more Abadie figures. Since the (Abadie) "catalog" is my way of organizing and displaying the well-known sheets, all that remains are the individual (Abadie) figures. Unfortunately, I have no background information on them. I can only say that there were a great many of these figures and that they were likely included—either singly or in groups of two or three—with specific packs of cigarette paper.

The German figures shown here all depict Wehrmacht personnel from 1935 or 1936. I am not entirely certain about the artillery group, however. The extensive red piping on the uniforms was really a feature of World War I-era uniforms. Did the artist simply want more contrast, or are there different series of German figures?

Best regards,

Andreas

Abadie-Papier-Gesellschaft

The Austrian company Abadie traces its origins back to the Hungarian industrialist Emil M. Farchy, who established a cigarette paper factory in Vienna and began production there in 1907. In 1910, the French "Abadie-Papier-Gesellschaft" took over the operation of this factory. In 1938, the business underwent "Aryanization." The war and post-war periods saw several subsequent name changes and other developments, until the company was finally acquired by Austria Tabakwerke in 1972. Shortly thereafter, production was discontinued.

The Austrian firm Abadie utilized extensive promotional material, including many items aimed at children. There were countless different series of trading cards designed to be pasted into albums, as well as paper animals for crafting and cutout sheets—featuring, for instance, traditional folk costumes.

Here, I would like to document the five series known to me that can be classified under the collecting theme of "paper soldiers." The figures depicting soldiers exclusively most likely all date back to the period prior to the Aryanization. The series featuring Wild West figures, however, is very difficult to date. To date, I have not found any corroborating evidence for it anywhere; consequently, these figures could potentially originate from the early post-war era.

Since the company produced not only cigarette paper but also other paper products—and possessed its own printing presses as well as a poster-printing department—it must be assumed that the paper-based advertising products bearing the Abadie name were also manufactured in-house.

Abadie - Einzelfiguren, Britische Armee

Hello,

I haven't shown anything from Abadie in quite a while! So here are a few more of the individual figures I promised a long time ago. This time I'm showing the English (British) army figures I own from this double-sided printed figure series.

Andreas

Abadie - Soldatenbilderbogen, Musikkorps

Hello,

today I'm showing you another Abadie sheet. This time it's an infantry band, specifically from the Austrian Guard Battalion.

I have one complete sheet from the first series, and I'll also show you a variant from the second series. These second-series sheets are slightly larger, and the arrangement of the figures was often changed. This is also the case here. Unfortunately, a piece of the sheet is missing, as is the Roman numeral. I suspect it once bore the Roman numeral "II," but that's just my guess, based on the fact that the Guard Battalion itself had the number I. Perhaps I'll manage to find an undamaged sheet someday, and then I'll show it to you here in my little blog.

Best regards,

Andreas
